The Impact of Pregnancy on Your Oral Health

Dr. Andrew Tomes, DMD

What You Can Expect

Pregnancy Gingivitis: this is a term used to refer to the gum health during pregnancy

- Gum Irritation: the increase in hormone levels during pregnancy causes your gums to become inflamed causing bleeding, sensitivity, redness, and swelling.

- Increased Risk of Decay

- Teeth May Feel Loose

These effects on the gums combined with poor oral hygiene can lead to periodontal disease and bone loss which will have effects on oral and overall health for the rest of your life.

Recommendations to Maintain Proper Oral Hygiene

- Maintain Proper Oral Hygiene: brush with toothpaste and floss before bed and in the morning

- Maintain a Well Balance Diet

- Consult with your general dentist and complete all recommended treatment before becoming pregnant.

It is extremely important to be aware of and maintain your oral health during pregnancy as some studies show a link between gum disease and premature births.
